Time for change

1 min read
Yes, I think it might be time to close up this rusty old shop, and set up with new material at another locale.  I'm talking about a new dA account, obviously!  Maybe two new accounts - one for my "official" art for a project that my friends should know about where I don't have to worry about people stealing or I don't care about run-on sentences ...  (cough, ahem)

And a more casual place to celebrate screenshots of my Wipeout fetish, and maybe even a ... a ...... fanart or two.  Blasphemy to my OC beliefs!  Yeah.  Did I mention my art today is better than my current old stuff?  Don't worry, I haven't left yet.  But I'll only be kidnapping the coolest people for my friend list.

So apparently Kumoricon wasn't as successful this year as it was last year. The biggest problems were the venue and the hotel staff. The attendence didn't jump exponentially as would be expected, but that makes SOME people happy. Despite what everyone says, though, I had fun. Mostly because I'm k-con staff and don't have to worry about that stuff.

Specifically, the hotel is too small for our con. The elevators were CONSTANTLY being used, and the wait to get on one could be up to 30 minutes. So many people decided to use the one and only Super Secret Staircase. Again, problems included said staircase being WAAAYYYYYY too narrow and the lower levels being locked. Lobby to 21st floor. Long walk. All upstairs. Breath shortage.
What turned people off the most was the hotel staff, though. Why were they turning people around and not letting them go to the gaming room level?! Why did they lock the escalators, staircase, and elevators? Why did they make this stupid law about not wearing masks in the Lobby, yet it was okay everywhere else? ......  Well, I was k-con staff, and *cough* could go anywhere ~_^

Come on, though. Let's think about the good things. That's what our con is about; good things. FIRST! 24-hour anime convention! It warms my heart when I don't sleep more than 6 hours over a 3 day weekend. I got to spend a good portion of it in the game room during the later hours ^^
A huge success was the karaoke room and THE VIEW FROM IT on the top floor! Well, the karaoke itself wasn't THAT great. They also had a bar and get-hammered-after-hours hours.
I think my panels on Developing An Anime Style and How NOT To Draw Manga could've been more fun and well receieved if I had prepared more than a few hours before both of them. I kind of ad-libbed a How To: Weapons panels when our host showed up late. We started with giant lobster claws and ended with a recurve bow with a sword mounted in front for efficient melee attacks, it could fly because it had wings on both ends, and finally an added bonus to long range with a bazooka and lasers shooting out from it.

Everyone's highlight of Kumoricon is getting to see long distance friends, though. I can't describe how glad I was to get out of work for a week, go on a little trip, and say Hi to my friends in person. I got to show off how far my art really HAS come. I made a lot of new friends in the Creation Station this year, too, which was where I wanted to staff and spent most of the con.

I got a taste of working in the Artist Alley covering for a new friend of mine, the gaming manager now accepts me as one of their own staff even if my job is a different department, the CS manager actually put out the possibility of being her direct assistant in the future. Now that I think about it, I got to do a lot of new stuff this year. Next year, I'm going to aim for either CS assistant manager, Staff Preservation (because I love cooking and seeing the relief when staff actually sit down ^^), or something directly art related.

I've started watching ANIME now! Can you believe it?! .......
.......
What? You can't believe I DIDN'T watch anime until now? Unfortunately, my epilepsy affects my ability to retain information about small details, like plotlines and stuff. But looking at and unconsciously studying new art styles, emotion capturing, dynamics, and even computer graphics and backgrounds has reignited my lust to draw and improve. This is the stuff I remember. I just wish I could go on and on and on talking about art styles with someone who can relate! XD

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

                       COMMISSIONS .......... OPEN?!
Yep. I'm confident enough in my art now to start asking for commissions. I need to start getting recognized, even if it's just locally! IT'S TIME TO CHANGE THE WORLD!! ^^

Digital art requests might have to wait a little bit until I get familiar with a coloring program, but greyscale and traditional coloring takes far more care and perfection in my opinion. I AM trying to learn this new art coloring style, though, mostly because artists these days are REQUIRED to know cg and coloring at the very least.
ANYWAYS! PM me for interest in prices.

Sorry, GenkiIchigo, I'm stealing your journal ^^
100 QUESTIONS FOR AN ARTIST

01. What is your pen name?
dshwshr55 or ruinedmirage (online consoles)

02. What made you choose this name?
I was a dishwasher at the time and I like the number 5. I'm also working on a series called Ruins of Mirage.

03. Do you use PC or Mac?
PC.

04. What programs do you use most often?
Hmm...I only have Manga Studio on my computer. If there's free websites or something, I don't use'em.

05. Do you use mouse, or tablet?
Drawing? I'm all natural! Pencil and paper!

06. What color or color combinations do you find yourself using most often?
Black that fades into bright colors like teal or magenta or even yellow. Black to crimson is a favorite, too. I'm quite proficient with gradation of color pencils! Greyscale should also be mentioned.

07. What part of a picture do you put most effort into?
Used to be the face and hair, but those come almost naturally to me now. I work the most on dynamic angles and simple/complex poses.

08. How long does it take you do draw a picture?
Forever and about 30 minutes...

09. Do you keep your rough drafts?
No. I told one of my friends that old artwork is like high school: nothing but trash. The last thing I want to see or remember is ANY of those memories.

10. What font do you use most often?
Comic Sans

11. When you scan your image, what DPI do you use?
300 or 600 DPI

12. Do you do anything else when you're drawing?
Music, of course.

13. Approximately how many pictures do you draw in a month?
I usually wont get the incentive to actually FINISH a drawing for a couple months, but I can do maybe 10 rough sketches in a month.

14. What kind of paper do you draw your pictures on?
Just sketchbook paper, nothing special. I prefer the 11"x14" but it's too big for my scanner. No, really! That's my best excuse for never updating!

15. What kind of paper do you use for rough sketches and drafts?
Um.....let's try sketchbook paper.

16. How long does it take you to ink something?
An hour, 2 at the most.

17. Do you do comics, or fan comics?
Negative.

18. Do you like comics? Are they fun to make?
I love some comics. I wouldn't know about making them...

19. Have you ever submitted anything to a magazine?
Not yet, but I might someday.

20. Did it get published?
Ask me in a couple years.

21. Who are your favorite artists?
My inspiration for style is Joe Madureira.

22. Do you like anime/manga? If so, what are your favorite series?
Anime is great and stuff! I don't read much manga, though. Despite how completely suckage they are, I like Darkstalkers and Street Fighter Alpha!

23. Do you like cartoons/comics? If so, what are your favorite series?
Comics, definitely! Calvin and Hobbes is the only thing that will ALWAYS surpass ANY manga! I like Bucky from Get Fuzzy, too XD

24. Any artists that you wish you could draw like?
I'm getting kind of fond of my own style.

25. Do you read a lot of books?
Too many letters make my eyelids droopy.

26. Did you ever buy a book to inspire or teach you to draw?
I look at anime and manga art books at book stores all the time. I don't really buy them anymore, though.

27. Any video games you enjoy?
I could name a few ^^

28. Any favorite characters from video games?
Kirby! Beat that!

29. Do you have a favorite writer?
If the letters were pictures, I might consider looking at them.

30. Any books you really enjoy?
Calvin and Hobbes! My sketchbook is looking better, too.

31. Do you draw fanart?
No, but I can.

32. Do you listen to music while you draw?
While I draw, eat, shower, draw, sleep, type, game, in the bathroom, etc...  Oh! Yes, I do.

33. Any recommended songs?
"Hung Up" by Madonna

34. Any other art websites that you really enjoy?
I go to any anime art links generally.

35. Are there any websites that you go to everyday?
AdvancedAnime, AnimeGalleries, Kcon forums, and dA.

36. What is your dream website like?
Anime/Gaming .... with a WipeOut theme! And music!

37. Do you like your own art?
Yeah, but I'm modest about it so other people compliment me! Don't tell anyone <.<;;

38. What do you enjoy watching on television?
Pictures hooked up to a video game console.

39. Favorite celebrity?
I don't have any personal relations with celebrities really.

44. Can you cook?
Who can't? ^^
Oh yeah, my wife.

45. Any devices you use often for email? Any electronic pets?
Computer maybe? I have a Neopet, but I don't care about him. Sorry pory_with_an_A

46. Are you tech-savvy?
I found the power switch on my computer last week. But I can hook up 400 game consoles to the same TV in 3.5 minutes blindfolded.

47. Do you want to become a professional artist?
It's probably my most likely career choice.

48. Are there any other jobs you're interested in?
No! Haha. Um.... No, I'm not kidding.

52. Have you ever entered an art contest?
Yep!

53. When did you start drawing seriously?
After high school. Pretty late, eh?

54. Do you use references? If so, for what?
References are blasphemy! The only time I use a reference is looking at my own hands.

55. Are you a DA subscriber? If so, are you a beta-tester?
I'm even writing a JOURNAL on dA! Not beta or sub, though.

56. Do you have a lot of net friends?
A few.

57. Do you have a lot of friends that also draw?
Everyone can draw!

58. What time of the day do you usually go online?
Early early, and like at 3 p.m.

59. Do you like to go to chat rooms?
No.

60. Do you have your own computer?
Yep, and I even bought it myself!

61. What would you say to the person that you admire?
I can't say I really admire anyone. Admiration and inspiration are different. If you ask me as an egotistical ethics professor, the only person to really admire is yourself.

62. Does your mind wander when you draw?
"Creativity is the essence of the scientific mind." Drawing isn't really scientific, in a sense, so I space out a lot.

63. Have you drawn poorly because you think too much?
I'm working on that. Drawing isn't just aesthetic improvement.

64. Do you have any friends who are professional artists?
I think "professional artist" is a relative term. So maybe.

65. Where do you often hang out?
In my bedroom. I lay down when I draw.

66. Are there any popular artists that you don't like much? (no need to name names if you don't want to)

67. Are there any situations in which you really don't like being an Artist?
When stuff sucks.

68. How about situations that make you love it?
People who drool. Money is convenient also.

69. What's the one thing that makes you grateful that the internet exists?
Anime art sites!

70. Is there anything out there that makes you wish the internet didn't exist?
Mmmm... no, I'm happy.

71. What's your first drawing?
Probably an abstract drawing at 2 years old. Abstract being the key word.

72. Any art you did prior to that?
I'm not too great at remembering .... anything.

73. Has your style changed a lot since then?
...... If it didn't, I'd probably cry.

74. If it has changed, in what ways?
Good ways.

75. Have you experienced artist's block before?
Everyone has.

76. If so, how do you usually get out of it?
Click the back of my mechanical pencil three time, then stab it into my forehead and try not to hit my eye.

77. What do you do when you can't get out of it?
Hurt, to say the least.

78. Any people that have influenced you a lot?
Mad Joe! He's one of the reasons I love western comics as well.

79. What made you want to start drawing?
I saw I had potential.

81. Has anything ever made you want to quit art all together?
Feh. I can't see why someone would want to quit their passion. Euphoria!

82. What do you think about netiquette?
I only settle for people with perfect grammar. Period.

83. Have you ever been spammed or trolled?
*shrug*

86. Do you upload high quality versions of your Deviations, or do you prefer to upload a lower quality?
Probably lower, just because I said so.

87. Do you have custom CSS? If so, did you make it yourself?
No CSS.

88. Do you have good vision?
Excellent vision! I can see dead people! That's how good ^^ (not really, but I'll never need glasses)

89. If you can get anyone's autograph, whose would you get?
Whomever has the coolest looking sig.

90. What would you say to that person when he or she gives you an autograph?
"Thanks" >.>

91. Do you like to draw on Oekaki BBS?
Never tried it.

92. Do you have a job?
Yes. It pays the bills.

93. Did you take art in school? If so, did you do well? Are you still taking it?
I took art in high school, but I never did ANY of the teacher's assignments. I just did my own art, then entered my pieces into this statewide contest and got a 2 year scholarship to college and $3200. I told my teacher I should be teaching the class. She was like a hippy or something, so she didn't have the balls to give someone a bad grade.

94. Have you taken art lessons outside of a school setting?
Nope, just self study.

95. Have you ever drawn something just because it was the cool thing to do -- the hip new fad?
Whatever. I MAKE THE FADS!! ^^

96. What's your favorite phrase/quote?
Don't have one.

97. Do you present yourself differently online than you do in your real life?
I guess, I'm a lot more quick-witted and funnier when I'm typing. I'm completely shy and antisocial in real life.

98. What's your goal now?
Improvement. And finishing stuff before Kcon.

99. What do you have to say to yourself?
See #98

100. Lastly, what do you have to say to everyone who read this?
You must've been bored.... or really interested in my life!
